July 21, 1954 — Feb. 23, 2009
My Dad was a very loving person. Many people would describe him as “A big teddy bear” always there to support you and always there to love you. He got so much joy out of helping people, and went into the medical field so he could help people heal.
My Dad loved the outdoors and was at his best when he could breathe the fresh air and be in nature. Hiking, skiing, climbing, swimming, sitting.
My Dad was a big kid. He loved to have fun. Sometimes one could compare him to a 15 year old boy, with his love for cartoons and his crude jokes. He had a deep love of Disneyland and when I use to see him there it was like watching him come home. He was a kid again and he seemed to feel happy, and safe.
My Dad was very intelligent. He studied hard, and retained what he learned, and was always able to pull out that knowledge when someone might need it.
My Dad had a love of art. He planned and sketched beautiful things that he always intended to get around to making. Sometimes he would, like the winding cement staircase at my childhood home. or the lovely chicken coop at his last home. He loved to plan, and had brilliant plans for what he was going to do to make things beautiful. But he found that often his plans were quite a bit bigger then he had originally planned.
My Dad loved his family. He loved his parents, his siblings, his wife, his kids, his grand-kids and anyone else who was somehow connected to him. His parents taught him just how important family is, and above all to love and cherish that gift.
My Dad taught me to love, and respect people but not to put them before yourself. He taught me to love and cherish family. He taught me to use and ax and a chainsaw. He taught me that life is worth living, even when things are the hardest.
Some of these lessons have only come after his death. But I know they are the lessons he intended for me, and my siblings and the rest of our families to learn.
Dad, I love you. I am sorry I didn’t tell you more often. But I love you, and always will.
Rest in peace.
