My Tattoo Ideas

Yes, I want a tattoo now. Somehow it rather surprises me that I don’t have one yet. I guess that is one thing that I realized I needed to wait on. Thank God I have some sense! Interestingly enough though my tattoo ideas are the same as they where when I was 18 and first contemplating the idea. I am a Tolkien fan. His writing is (in every sense of the word) awesome. What a truly brilliant man! I still get goosebumps when I read the books! I’ve never known anything like that. Even after knowing the story by heart I can still feel that adrenalin rush. Yes. I’m a fan. Sadly in my tattoo research there are a lot of people who are huge fans of the movies. The movies are nice for sure, but they have nothing on the books. In a sense I think it is sad that so many people will just settle for the images produced by someone else, where as with reading you create your own.

Anyways, I want a Tolkien tattoo. My idea is this, JRRT symbol on my back. About the size in the picture but then adding either celtic knot designs or tribal designs. I haven’t decided whether I want it on my spine between my shoulders and then have the designs go striate up and down the spine (just a few inches, not the whole spine). The other idea is to have the symbol on my lower back on the right side and the design would sorta whined from my spine below my pants line, up to the right side of my back and end just under my shoulder blade. The one between the shoulders would probably have celtic designs and the lower back would probably be a tribal design and not symmetrical. The way I imagine it the lower back will be much larger (therefore much more expensive), while between the shoulders will be smaller and symmetrical. No color for either. I have seen some beautiful work in color, but there is just something about the plain black that is very primal and very beautiful to me.

I really would like to do this for my 25th birthday (coming up next month) but I’m not sure right now is really the right time. If I get money for my birthday I would happily put that towards this tattoo, but if I get anything it will be little and our money is rather tight right now too. DH’s comment was (a quote from my father), “If it’s really worth having you can wait.” I’ve never done anything by waiting. DH and I got married after knowing each other for two months. We moved to Hawaii with one months notice to family and friends. I don’t wait very well (although I must admit I have learned to do it better in the last year or two, but it makes me uneasy). Waiting might be the best way to go though as I really don’t know just yet what the design around the symbol will be. I want to try and draw it out, but I don’t know much about drawing celtic designs or tribal designs. You’ll know one way or the other if it happens. I’ll either be complain out of pain of waiting, or complaining because of the pain on my back.:)

  2. i have the symbol of tolkien as my “tramp stamp” lol, it looks really cool. i want to go back and add some simblemyne flowers and some tribal designs on either side of it.

  3. I have a small Winnie-the-Pooh on my right hip (more toward my back than my front) that I got back in college. He’s writing on a scroll and the scroll is me. I put him there rather than a publicly visible place because I had a feeling I’d be in the corporate world (if even just for a little while). I was right, and glad of the private placement.

  4. That is another thing that has held me back from tattooing excessively. I have plans to be a midwife someday and to me a heavily tattooed midwife seems like an oxymoron for some reason. I have yet to do tattoo anything on myself as I don’t know yet what or where I want it and this is not something I want to make a mistake on. Thanks for sharing.:)

  5. haha! my second tattoo to make the blog of someone i don’t know!

I’ll have to tell my tattoo artist.

Am getting the tree of Gondor on my back and two original Tolkien illustrations of dragons to flank that symbol (the sketch he did of smaug and of the dragon from father giles of ham).

  6. That’s awesome! This tattoo is just so beautiful and well done. I’ve seen others, but this one seems to be my favorite. Thanks for sharing your picture with the world and I would love to see the new ones when you get them!
