Duck Tape Waist Cincher

So today I decided was the day to give this a try. I have to say I feel incredibly proud. This project turned out beautiful. Sadly, because I put a little to much into making it perfect, it doesn’t fit me. *sigh* The waist will probably fit about a 24″ and it has a huge modesty panel (because I knew I would need it. I will have to try it on again. It just looks goofy with a 6″ gap where it laces up. It is possible that I could do some more adjusting and it would fit better, but I’m not sure. Anyways, here are pictures.

These are the supplies I used. Three different colors of duck tape, scissors, and old shirt, old irrigation tubes as boning, and the cover of the board book for the busk. The pliers and hangers I didn’t end up needing.

And here is the finished product! I think it is quite lovely myself. I couldn’t take pictures along the way as I was doing it by myself and wasn’t interested in stopping constantly to try and position the camera.

I am bummed that it doesn’t fit, but now that I know how to make it and what NOT to do.
(fyi, that would be wrapping your waist really tight with duck tape, cutting it down the middle and then folding over the cutted edge about and inch and a quarter on either side to make look nice. You can still make it look just as nice and add the busk, but don’t fold it over! Just put the busk underneath and fold duck tape ove it to keep it in place. I’ll try that next time.) This was really a fun project. I woould love to put grommets in the next one because that looks so nice.

  2. Hey Katy,

Well I used this tutorial(http://www.geocities.com/clytaemnestra_28/ductapecorset1). Instead of using plastic wrap I had a shirt that I didn’t care about. I used grey duct tape for that first layer and to get my shaping right. Then I cut it where I wanted it to be laced and trimmed off the extra fabric from the shirt. After that I had cut “busk” which was just the cover from a children’s board book. I made the mistake of folding over my duct tape/fabric over the busk pieces which then made the cincher WAY to small. So don’t do that! I would just duct tape that in place where you what your lacing to go. I also would recommend making holes in the busk before you get it all together cause it was a mess for me.

Once you tape your busk in place then start with your color tape. I did like one or two layers of red. The I took the “boning” I had, which was just old irrigation tubes, and put one black piece of tape over that and spaced them out across the cincher. Then went back over it with red and hide all the black cept for the “boning”. I made a mossiest panel, but I hated it and don’t know that it is worth your time. And I attached that to one side. Then I had to use a drill to make the holes for the laces, and that was a SUPER MESS! There has to be a better way to do that, but I don’t know what. I am sure it would have been somewhat easier if I had pre-drilled the busk and not used so much tape (because I used a ton!). I wanted to put grommets on there, but it was so thick already. I tried not to put to much tape on the side that would be against my skin, so that it might breathe a little more, but I’ve never really worn it so I don’t know if that
    theory works.

I would recommend checking out this page(http://www.ducktapeclub.com/ducktivities/projects/fabric.asp) which has a tutorial for how to make duct tape fabric. And I would also recommend having someone help you with the initial wrapping and cutting part, cause that was challenging alone. It took me maybe 2-3 hours to do alone.

I hope this helps and I hope you have fun making it and experimenting! Good Luck!

  3. thanks very much for the ideas!
