The other night I started researching dog foods. Mama & Midnight are not young and they need some good attention if we want to keep them around for a while. Friends of ours had their dogs until they were somewhere around 17 years old. They took very good care of the dogs and gave them good food and supplements. They were great dogs! Mama & Midnight are awesome too and I think we can keep them around for a while if we start taking great care of them now.
I found this site that rates dog foods. I was so impressed! We did some searching around for the different brands. Some of them look awesome, but if we feed the dogs the suggested amount then we’ll be spending somewhere around $60 (+shipping of about $20 because no one around her sells the stuff) a month! There is no way we can afford that as much as I love the dogs. But we found this website called Paws Choice where if you spend more then $50 you get free shipping. That was a big plus! The food I really wanted to get the dogs is called Orijen. No grain in it, all really awesome ingredients. But then it’s also $60 a bag. And really for that quality food Orijen was the best priced. After some more research we found this stuff called Solid Gold Wolf King. Here is the review and here is where we bought it from. It’s not the top of the line, but it is the best we can do and certainly better then what we are feeding them now. I was a little surprised to see that Iams only rated a 1 on the review site. I thought it might at least get a 2 maybe even 3. But no, it’s crap just like the rest of that cheap stuff. The Solid Gold ordered from this website is just a bit more expensive then where we were paying at Fleet Farm for the crap. So why not get them something better for just a bit more?
I’m glad we did the research. For such big dogs, and they are older, I think this is a reasonable investment. I would also like to get them some 2Docs supplements. Hank is a friend of ours (and he’s the one who had those awesome dogs that lived till they were 17!) and I know his products are very good quality.
So there’s my healthy dog food shpeal.

Good work on the research. I think a lot of people would be surprised at how low the so-called premium dog foods rate on most unbiased rankings. They just have really good marketing. As long as the customer believes they are getting high quality many of the dog food companies don’t seem to care whether the quality is really there or not.
I think the big dog food companies are like many big companies and, like you said, just have great marketing. I think too they are so popular because so many people look at the price and flip on the good foods. I admit I did it myself. But most people just leave it at that and go, “Oh, Iams is kinda expensive and it’s a popular brand, it must be good.” end of subject. I was so pleased with the site that I found comparing dog foods. It was so useful and I feel like we found the best food we could, for our price range.
