Chickens and starts

Since I haven’t updated about the chickens lately I thought I would.  They are nearly a month old.  As I posted before we lost two, but no everyone else is doing fine.

They eat and drink constantly and are growing huge!  I was feeling them a mix I made of grains and beans and seeds, but it was so much work using the coffee grinder all the time and making small batches.  So we bought some chick feed that’s non-medicated.  Organic of transitional would have been great, but I really just wanted to get them eating something besides my mix.  We’ll look for something a little better when we by food again sometime this week.  I’ve been adding organic flax seeds to their food and a green drink mix occasionally too.  And finally my husband got smart and elevated their food and water with some wood blocks so they would stop tipping them over and filling them up with sawdust.  Right now my husband is making a trough for their food, since they are getting to big for the little chick feeders we have.

I haven’t just sat down and watched them yet.  Which is something I would like to do.  Just be with them and hang out.  It’s just so uncomfortable to sit in the room we have them in.  It’s under construction, my daughers playroom and the brooder right now.  Rather chaotic.  I am really looking forward to warmer weather and being able to let them roam around outside.

We have a whole table full of seed starts in our living room.  Three kinds of tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, marigolds, bachelors buttons, eggplant, thyme, rosemary, and lots of brussle sprouts are up and stretching for the sun.  It’s so exciting to think that in another month (hopefully) we are going to have all these things in the garden and starting to grow.  My mother-in-law was talking about getting peas in the ground as soon as the snow is gone again.  I can hardly wait to have fresh veges again.

I’m dreaming of summer.  Picking flowers, and berries, sunshine, hot weather, swimming, camping, gardening, watching chickens in the yard, walks through the fields. *sigh*  But spring is here now and it is really beautiful too. *sighs*
